Building a wash day that actually works
Everything here is cosmetic. It changes how hair looks and feels, and none of it treats, cures or prevents any condition.
What order do these go in?
Most people own the right things and use them in the wrong order, which is why a routine can feel like it does nothing. The sequence that gets the most out of what is here:
- In the shower. Work the scalp brush through while you shampoo. It lifts product and buildup off the scalp better than fingertips, and it feels good, which is most of why people keep doing it.
- Mask on damp, not soaking, hair. Wring the water out first. A mask applied to hair that is still dripping is mostly diluted before it starts.
- Add heat if you have ten minutes. The thermal cap holds warmth against the hair while the mask sits, which helps it absorb.
- Detangle before drying, from the ends up. Start at the bottom and work upward in sections with the detangling brush. Starting at the roots drags every knot down into one bigger knot.
- Dry gently. Rubbing wet hair with a bath towel is what roughs up the surface and leaves it looking frizzy. Squeezing the water out with a microfibre wrap avoids the friction.
- Style without heat where you can. The heatless ribbon set shapes curls overnight, so there is no iron involved.
How long should a mask stay on?
Ten to twenty minutes does nearly all of the work. Leaving one on for hours does not double the result, and there is no benefit to sleeping in it. The longer answer is here.
Do I need the cap, or is that just an upsell?
You do not need it. A mask works without one. The cap holds warmth in while the mask sits, which is the same reason salons use heat, and it costs $24.99 against $34.99 for the mask itself. If you are already doing a mask most weeks it earns its place. If you use one twice a year, skip it. The two together are $44.99, which is less than buying them separately.
What none of this does
It does not repair split ends, which can only be cut off, and it does not change hair that is thinning. Anything sold as a fix for a scalp or hair condition is a medicine, not a cosmetic, and this is not that. What these do is make hair easier to handle and better looking after a wash.
