How Long Should You Leave a Hair Mask On?
Ten to twenty minutes is right for most rinse-out hair masks, and the label on your particular mask beats any general rule. Longer is not proportionally better: the conditioning agents that are going to attach to the hair surface mostly do so early, and after about twenty minutes you are largely just waiting.
Why longer does not mean better
A rinse-out mask works on the surface and outer layers of the hair. The ingredients that smooth and soften attach fairly quickly once hair is damp and warm. Once that has happened, extra time adds very little, which is why a mask left on for two hours does not feel twice as good as one left on for twenty minutes.
What extra time can do is leave fine hair feeling heavy or limp, because more product stays behind than the hair needs. If your hair goes flat after masking, the fix is usually less time and a more thorough rinse, not a different mask.
Does heat help?
A little, and not for the reason most people think. Gentle warmth keeps the mask from cooling and drying on the hair, and it stops it dripping down your neck, which in practice means you actually leave it on for the full time instead of rinsing early. That is most of the benefit.
You do not need a heated appliance for this. Your own scalp gives off enough warmth if you trap it. A foil-lined thermal cap insulates rather than generating heat of its own, which is all that is required. Wrapping a warm towel over the top does a rougher version of the same thing.
A sensible routine
- Shampoo, then squeeze out the excess water. Mask on soaking-wet hair gets diluted.
- Apply from the mid-lengths to the ends. Skip the roots unless the label says otherwise, since that is where heaviness comes from.
- Cover with a cap or a towel if you have one.
- Wait ten to twenty minutes.
- Rinse properly, for longer than you think. Under-rinsing is what makes hair feel coated.
How often?
Once a week suits most people. If your hair is very dry or you heat-style often you might want it twice; if your hair is fine and gets weighed down easily, once a fortnight may be plenty. There is no benefit to masking daily.
Can you leave a mask on overnight?
Some masks are formulated as overnight treatments and will say so. A standard rinse-out mask is not, and leaving one on all night mostly gets you a product-coated pillowcase and heavier-feeling hair in the morning. If you want an overnight step, use a product made for it rather than stretching a rinse-out mask into that job.
Being clear about what a mask does
A conditioning mask improves how hair looks and feels: softer, glossier, easier to comb, less frizz. It works on the surface of the hair. It does not repair damage in a structural sense, it does not mend split ends, and it is not a treatment for any scalp condition. Hair that is already damaged can be made to look and feel much better, which is worth having, but it is a cosmetic result rather than a repair.
What we make of it
Our Rice Water and Keratin Hair Mask is a ten-to-twenty-minute rinse-out mask, and the Deep Conditioning Ritual pairs it with the thermal cap for the reason above: the cap is what makes you actually leave it on long enough. If you want the fuller method, see how to use a hair mask, and if you are drying afterwards, microfibre versus a regular towel matters more than people expect. Free shipping on every order.
