Do Shower Filters Actually Work? An Honest Answer

Short answer: yes, for a narrow job. A shower filter reduces chlorine taste and odour and traps fine sediment and rust particles, which is why filtered water often feels less harsh on skin and hair. It does not soften hard water, it does not make water safe to drink, and it does not treat any skin or scalp condition. Most disappointment with shower filters comes from buying one expecting the second list.

What a shower filter genuinely does

Two things, both mechanical and both easy to notice.

It reduces chlorine taste and odour. Nearly every public water supply in New Zealand carries a residual disinfectant to the tap. The regulator has granted exactly one exemption from that requirement nationwide, which is a legal requirement under the Water Services Act 2021. That is a good thing for safety, and it is also why your shower sometimes smells faintly of a swimming pool. Filter media reduce that.

It traps sediment. Fine grit, rust flecks and pipe debris get caught before they reach you. If you have ever seen a cartridge come out rust-orange after a month, that is the visible part of the job.

What it does not do, however it is marketed

• It does not soften hard water. Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium. A shower filter cartridge does not remove dissolved minerals in any meaningful quantity. If a product claims to soften water, treat that claim with suspicion. If hardness is your actual problem, what hard water does to hair is a different question with a different answer.
• It does not make the water drinkable to a higher standard. A shower filter is not a drinking-water filter and should not be used as one.
• It does not treat eczema, dandruff, acne or hair loss. Some people find less chlorine feels gentler. That is a comfort and appearance change, not a medical one, and anything sold on that basis is overreaching.
• It does not make hair grow. Nothing in a shower filter does.

So why do people say their skin and hair feel better?

Mostly because chlorine is drying, and less of it on your skin and hair usually feels better. That is a real, noticeable difference for a lot of people, and it is also a subjective one: you are the only judge of whether it is worth the money. There is no before-and-after photo that honestly demonstrates it, which is why we do not publish any.

How to tell whether one is worth it for you

Probably worth it if: you can smell chlorine in your shower, your hair feels straw-like after washing, you have colour-treated hair, or you shower daily and are simply curious whether it feels nicer. It is a cheap experiment.

Probably not worth it if: you are chasing a fix for a diagnosed skin condition, you want softer water for limescale reasons, or you expect it to change how your hair grows. Buy it for comfort, not for treatment.

The two things that actually determine whether it works

You have to change the cartridge. A spent cartridge does very little. Most need swapping every one to two months depending on your water and how often you shower, and this is the single most common reason a filter "stops working". We cover the timing in how often to replace a shower filter.

Inline filter or filtered shower head?

An inline filter screws in between your existing hose and the head you already own, so you keep your current shower head. A filtered head replaces the head and holds the cartridge inside the handle.
